Skunk weed is a family of cannabis varieties known for their distinctive aroma and genetics. In some countries, such as the UK, “skunk” is also used as a generic term to describe premium strength cannabis. Skunk cannabis varieties are favored by both amateur and professional growers for their easy cultivation and heavy harvests.

The name “skunk” originated in 1970s California when breeders wanted a name that would instantly convey the powerful aroma of the cannabis variety. They chose the name “skunk” because skunks are known for spraying a foul-smelling liquid to deter attackers. The name quickly gained appeal and is still used today.

The origins of Skunk cannabis seeds can be traced back to David Watson, also known as Sam The Skunkman, who brought seeds from his breeding work in California to Amsterdam in the mid-1980s. Sam had worked with Sacred Seeds in Santa Cruz, California and had developed Skunk as a hybrid between two Sativa varieties, Colombian Gold and Acapulco Gold, with an Afghani Indica included in the genetic mix. Skunk gained popularity among Dutch growers for its heavy yields, consistent growth, and high THC levels.

Skunk seeds quickly became popular among home growers in the Netherlands, and within a year or two of Sam’s arrival, there were numerous phenotype selections, crosses, and hybrids using Skunk genetics. Skunk became a legendary variety in the cannabis community, known for its sticky buds, high potency, and unmistakable skunk aroma. It was also widely used for hybridization projects, thanks to its desirable attributes.

Feminized Skunk seeds became especially popular among home growers when Dutch Passion discovered the technique to feminize cannabis seeds in the 1990s. This offered more convenience as there were no male plants to worry about, and grow rooms could be smaller and simpler. Skunk seeds such as Orange Bud, Skunk #1, Skunk #11, and Euforia have been best-sellers for Dutch Passion for several decades.

Skunk varieties are recognized for their THC-rich, strong effects. In the UK, “skunk” is sometimes used as a generic term for all high-strength cannabis. Skunk genetics have been widely used in creating hybrid feminized cannabis seed varieties, resulting in a range of indica-dominant and skunk-dominant hybrids available from various seed companies.

Skunk seeds are popular among home growers due to their ease of cultivation, high yields, and consistent results. They are available in both feminized and autoflowering varieties. Autoflowering skunk seeds can go from seed to harvest in around 75 days indoors, making the growing process faster and easier. Skunk seeds continue to be a favorite choice for home growers who value the combination of strong aroma, heavy yields, and high-quality buds.
